Healthy Indian Food

CNN.com reports that Indian food is one of the top 5 healthiest ethnic cuisines. Ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and other aromatic spices used in Indian food can help protect against some forms of cancer. Some studies are also showing the positive effect ginger and turmeric have on Alzheimer’s patients, after noticing a trend of lower cases of Alzheimer’s in India than America. They are also great for digestion and generalized inflammation and are added to teas and supplements for that reason.

Curry is yellow due to the turmeric, which is being studied all over the world for its health properties. An anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant, turmeric is found in many Indian dishes and adds color, flavor and may just help you feel better!

The Indus Valley

The Indus Valley is the birthplace of Sanskrit, the parent language of many Indian languages, including Hindi. Traders who came to the Indus Valley on the Sindhu River weren’t able to say “Sindhu” (a form of ‘Indus”) correctly. Instead, they said “Hindu” and thus, the name of a people, a language, and a culture were born. That influence lasts until today as, in Hindi itself, the name for the country the world calls “India” is “Hindustan” and Indians are “Hindustani”.

The great Indus city of Mohenjo Daro was more advanced than many cities of that time, with conveniences, like the “The Great Bath”, a communal bathing area where a system of viaducts drained used water and provided fresh water on a regular basis. Predating the famous Roman aqueducts by thousands of years, it was part of the world’s first indoor plumbing.

Indus Valley residents are also credited with creating buttons, stepwells, and rulers marked with a then tiny unit of measurement less than an inch—significant because no one else then had a concept of measurement that small. Ayrabata of the Indus people created a decimal system which later led to numerical symbols and included the concept of zero. He also believed the sun, not the earth, was the center of the universe and that the earth orbited the sun.

Innovation and invention far ahead of their time were obviously important in the Indus Valley Civilization. For that reason, we here at Indus Modern Kitchen chose our name to honor the beginnings of our culture. Indus Modern Kitchen is a little different in concept and décor from most Indian restaurants. We like to think our blend of traditional favorites and newer Indian taste treats as well as our new method of delivery pays homage to our Indus Valley Civilization heritage.
